Hear It First Hand Through Profiles In Fitness
Stay tuned – For each month we plan to share the fitness stories of people of all ages and all walks of life and share how they got into fitness and what benefits they have experienced. People have many different reasons for adapting a Wellness Lifestyle however the end result is always almost the same, better physical and mental health and better quality of life.
The Coral Lakes Club House offers so many different fitness programs for its members to stay, young, healthy and fit. However considering the size of the Coral Lakes Community it seems like a lot more people could be benefiting from the wonderful fitness programs that are offered. “Profiles in Fitness” is a column by Body Wellness® to help motivate and inspire members to participate in fitness by reading the stories of others members who already take advantage of the Coral Lakes Fitness program.
Barry continues; “Well, when moved to Florida in 78, the community had a fitness center and that’s when I started. I use in the bike for 10-12 minutes before I start using the bands, balls and the ab wheel. I do a lot of stretching, hamstrings, quads, glutes.” Barry responds pointing to the different stations around the fitness center.
B.W. I always want to know, “How do you feel as a result of working out?”
Barry, said, “I am 80 years old, and I do not know what that means.” We laugh!! “I feel better than I did 10 or 15 years ago.
B.W. I wonder, “Barry, how many times a week do you work out?” He quickly replies, “A minimum of 5 days. When we’re done, I’ll finish my workout and then go play Tennis. I play tennis 3-4 days a week in the winter months.” I am shaking my head in amazement!!
B.W. “What does your doctor say about your health?” I am always curious about that.
He responds with a smile, “Are you kidding? They say when they grow up, they want to be just like me!!” We start laughing.
B.W. “Tell me Barry, what do you enjoy most about exercise?” I am interested to hear his response.
“Well.” he says slowly, “it gives me relaxation and I feel better and springy, like I can jump to the sky. I just feel better.” Well, I know what he is taking about!!
B.W. “Barry, what would you say is the biggest improvement you have experienced?”
“It’s simple, he responds, “Just better overall health and alertness.”
B.W. I am looking at Barry because he doesn’t look 80. Ok, here is my favorite question, “What would be your recommendation to people regarding exercise?”
Without thinking he says, “People have good intentions when they go to the gym. But, they do not do exercises correctly and refuse help from experts. They say, ‘I’ve been doing this for years.’ And they do not allow themselves to be corrected. But it’s a waste of time because they are not doing it correctly. They might as well take a walk around the block. For those who are not presently exercising, I say go in the pool, take a walk, go to Walmart and walk around, go to the malls and do some walking, it’s going to make you feel better.”
B.W. “Thanks Barry, words of wisdom indeed!”
